History of The Doberman Pinscher Club of Detroit
The Doberman Pinscher Club of Detroit (initially known as The Doberman Sportsmen’s Club of Detroit) was established in the 1920s with the assistance of Glenn Staines, one of the earliest and staunchest supporters of the Doberman Pinscher breed in America. Mr. Staines wrote a regular column for the publication Dog News, prepared the Articles of Incorporation for the Doberman Pinscher Club of America, and helped draft the first American version of the standard against which Dobermans are judged in conformation trials. He was an accomplished obedience trainer and judge who actively promoted the Doberman’s proficiency as a working dog, including its value as a devoted, courageous companion, protection dog, tracker, therapy, and service dog, including serving as a guide for the blind.
The Doberman Pinscher Club of Detroit (the “Club”) is dedicated to the ideals initially endorsed by Mr. Staines: to promote training and excellence in conformation, obedience, tracking, protection, therapy, and service skills. In 1961, the Club established a Memorial Trophy, which was awarded to the owner whose Dobermans won the Best of Winners award a total of three times at the Club’s annual specialty show. The Memorial Trophy was retired in 1995 and sent to the Doberman Pinscher Club of America Archives where it presently resides (see pictures below).
The Club’s members include many successful owners, breeders, exhibitors, trainers, and handlers of Champion Dobermans, as well as accomplished and credentialed Dobermans in obedience, agility, tracking, protection, therapy, and service skills. From 1988 to 2007, the Club regularly offered training in obedience and conformation classes. Presently, the Club offers specialty shows for conformation and obedience twice each year, in April and November. The Club also conducts a Working Aptitude Evaluation once every two years.
